Pineal Gland

It is a small gland attached to the dorsal side of the brain. It secretes melatonin that regulates the circardian rythm and sexual cycle. It is well developed in children. The pineal gland also plays a role in the regulation of female hormone levels, and it may affect fertility and the mensural cycle.

Serotonin is an another hormone secreted by pineal gland. Serotonin is the key hormone that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well - being and happiness. This hormone impacts your entire body. It enables brain cells and other  nervous system cells to communicate with each other. Serotonin also helps with sleeping, eating and digestion. Serotonin is acetylated and methylated to convert into melatonin.

Disorders that are caused by the malfuntioning of the pineal gland are Depression, Mood swings, Peptic or stomach ulcers, Disruption in sleep patterns, hormonal imbalance, sexual disorders. In case the secretion of melatonin is low than it will lead to anxiety, low thyroid hormone production, menopause symptoms etc.
